About Masjid Umar

Masjid Umar is a vibrant mosque and community hub located on Alfreton Road in Nottingham. Named after Sayyiduna ʿUmar ibn al-Khattāb (ra), one of the four rightly guided caliphs of Islam, the masjid strives to embody his legacy of justice, humility and service.

Our purpose is simple: to worship Allah ﷻ, to learn the Qur’an and Sunnah, and to serve the people of Nottingham with sincerity and ihsān (excellence). The teachings and activities of the masjid are grounded in the final revelation – the Qur’an – and the authentic Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

A Place of Worship

At its heart, Masjid Umar is a house of Allah – a place where Muslims can come together for ṣalāh, reflection and remembrance. The masjid provides a welcoming space for:

The five daily prayers and Jumuʿah (Friday) prayer
  • Ramaḍān worship, including tarāwīḥ and community iftars
  • Regular opportunities for duʿā, Qur’an recitation and spiritual growth

We aim to make the atmosphere of the masjid calm, dignified and focused on sincere worship.

A Centre of Learning

Masjid Umar is also an educational centre, supporting the tarbiyah (nurturing) of children, youth and adults. With an emphasis on the Qur’an and authentic Sunnah, the masjid offers a range of learning opportunities, such as:

  • Qur’an and basic Islamic studies for children
  • Circles of knowledge and reminders for brothers and sisters
  • Talks that explain Islam clearly for both Muslims and non-Muslims

All teaching is rooted in clarity, compassion and adherence to the way of the Prophet ﷺ and his companions.

Community & Social Hub

Beyond prayer and study, Masjid Umar plays an active social role. It is a place where families meet, friendships are built and the wider community can find support. The masjid works to:

  • Strengthen family and community bonds
  • Offer pastoral support and advice where possible
  • Encourage Muslims to contribute positively to life in Nottingham

Everyone is welcome to visit the mosque, learn about Islam and meet members of the community in a respectful, open environment.

Supporting the Masjid

As a registered UK mosque and community institution, Masjid Umar depends on the generosity of worshippers and well-wishers. Donations help to:

  • Maintain and improve the prayer facilities
  • Support educational and daʿwah activities
  • Keep the masjid open and welcoming for all who wish to visit

Whether you pray here regularly, attend occasionally, or simply value the presence of a strong masjid in Nottingham, your support makes a real difference.

We invite you, your family and your friends—Muslim and non-Muslim alike—to visit Masjid Umar, experience the atmosphere, ask questions and share in the ongoing work of worship, learning and service.
